Looking for ways to keep the conversation going about LGBTQ+ issues with your ERG, community group, or PFLAG chapter? Welcome to Something to Talk About, a series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality program to create conversation about LGBTQ+ issues. Each week we’ll offer an article on LGBTQ+ topics and suggest a few questions you can use to lead a discussion.

We hosted a conversation about this article as a part of PFLAG Connects and Something to Talk About Live on Thursday, August 19. Did you miss it? You can still watch it here!

Questions for Discussion:

  1. Many people weren't familiar with the annual prom for LGBTQ+ elders, hosted by the LA LGBT Center. Are there many events like this one in other communities? What impact do these events have on those able to attend? Is there a sense of events like this making up for missed opportunities?

  2. A study, recently published in the Clinical Gerontologist, analyzed research related to LGBTQ+ elder care in long-term facilities. What can you tell us about that study? Is there anything you would recommend to long-term care facilities that would like to create events and activities, like the senior prom, that are inclusive of LGBTQ+ residents?

  3. One of the filmmakers noted that she’d never met a lesbian over the age of 50. In your opinion, is that common for LGBTQ+ youth? Do you have any recommendations for community advocates who would like to create space where multiple generations of LGBTQ+ folks can come together and connect in a meaningful way?
