Looking for ways to keep the conversation going about LGBTQ+ issues with your ERG, community group, or PFLAG chapter? Welcome to Something to Talk About, a series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality program to create conversation about LGBTQ+ issues. Each week we’ll offer an article on LGBTQ+ topics and suggest a few questions you can use to lead a discussion.

We hosted a conversation about this article as a part of PFLAG Connects and Something to Talk About Live on Thursday, July 29. Did you miss it? You can still watch it here!

Article: Thousands march in Hungary Pride parade to oppose LGBT law

Author: Justin Spike

Questions for Discussion:

  1. How familiar were you with the legal changes that have been made in places like Hungary and Russia? What about these efforts is similar, and what about them is different? Did the expansiveness of the Hungarian law surprise you, or did it feel expected?

  2. Do you think that laws like the ones proposed in Hungary are sincere efforts from anti-equality activists to restrict LGBTQ+ lives, or do you think that LGBTQ+ issues are being used as a mobilizing tool for other political ends? Why or why not? Can you identify other examples of where this has unfolded similarly?

  3. Do you feel that monitoring -- and even becoming involved in advocacy -- on international LGBTQ+ issues is something activists in the U.S. should do? Why or why not? If Americans choose to become more engaged, what are some things they need to know before embarking on this work?
