Research consistently shows that when people see themselves represented in TV, film, and other media that it has positive impacts on their lives. And when queer filmmakers are involved in telling their own stories we get a more complete picture of LGBTQ+ lives represented on screen.  This episode of Something To Talk About Live, we will be discussing Liana DeMasi’s article in Vice, “6 LGBTQ+ Cinematographers on Breaking Out and Building a Queer Film Utopia” with filmmakers Qiydaar Foster, Nick Oceano, and Alice Wu.

Something to Talk About Live is a series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality program to create conversation about LGBTQ+ issues. Each week we offer an article on LGBTQ+ topics and suggest a few questions you can use to lead a discussion with your ERG, community group, or PFLAG chapter.

We hosted a conversation about this article as a part of PFLAG Connects and Something to Talk About Live on Thursday, June 9. Did you miss it? You can still watch it here!

Questions for Discussion:

  1. Can you identify the first film that you remember seeing that featured prominent LGBTQ+ characters or storylines? Was it a positive, accurate portrayal? Why or why not?

  2. Can you identify – outside our guests for this show – any LGBTQ+-identified filmmakers? How did you find out about them? If the answer is no, had you ever thought about this in the past? Why or why not?

  3. Many articles focus stories on the problems posed by the lack of visibility for marginalized people. What are some of the ways that you can help change this trend? How – and where – might you be able to elevate the work of queer filmmakers? Given the chance to do this, can you identify what film you’d suggest?
