fbpx Something to Talk About Live: Recognizing Juneteenth | Straight for Equality

Juneteenth, which commemorates the emancipation of enslaved Black Americans, has been celebrated since 1866. It did not become a federal holiday in the US until 2021.

Join us this Thursday, June 16th at 4:30 PM ET / 1:30 PM PT for Something to Talk About Live where we will be discussing Karen Marie’s article in The Buckeye Flame, “Pride Month Would Not Exist as We Know it if Juneteenth Did Not Happen” with Earl Fowlkes, President/CEO, Center for Black Equity and Robert Marchman, PFLAG National Board Member and Senior Policy Advisor on Diversity and Inclusion at the US Securities and Exchange Commission

We hosted a conversation about this article as a part of PFLAG Connects and Something to Talk About Live on Thursday, June 16. Did you miss it? You can still watch it here!

Article: Pride Month Would Not Exist as We Know it if Juneteenth Did Not Happen

Author: Karen Marie

Questions for Discussion:

  1. In this week’s article, the author comments that, “Pride Month would not exist as we know it if Juneteenth did not happen. It all comes together as we recognize that the most marginalized of any group is generally the BIPOC members of this group.”  Have you seen a shift in bigger awareness in LGBTQ+ spaces about the contributions of Black activists? If yes, in what ways? If no, why do you think this is the case?

  2. In the spaces that you occupy, do you feel like the focus that was on racial justice following George Floyd’s murder has continued? Is it still showing up in the LGBTQ+ spaces where you find yourself? If you answered no, how might you queue up this conversation more often?

  3. This week’s article includes a few suggestions on how to become more culturally inclusive during Pride month. Do you have any recommendations that you’d add? Are there any specific resources that have helped with your learning journey?
