The Importance of Chosen Family

Looking for ways to keep the conversation going about LGBTQ+ issues with your ERG, community group, or PFLAG chapter? Welcome to Something to Talk About, a monthly series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for EqualityTM program to create conversation about LGBTQ+ issues. Each month we’ll offer an article on LGBTQ+ topics and suggest a few questions you can use to lead a discussion.

We hosted a conversation about this article as a part of PFLAG Connects and Something to Talk About Live on Thursday, January 7. Did you miss it? You can still watch it!

Article: ‘Chosen families’ ruptured: How COVID-19 hit an LGBTQ lifeline

Source: NBC News

Author: Julie Compton

Questions for Discussion:

  1. When and where did you first hear about the concept of chosen family in the LGBTQ+ community? If you feel comfortable sharing, would you consider yourself to be a part of a chosen family? If so, how did you celebrate the holidays this year?

  2. The article notes that being rejected by biological family is a common reason that LGBTQ+ folks form chosen families. In your experience, is that always the case? If not, what are some of the other reasons you have seen chosen families form?

  3. Many of the chosen families featured in this article were formed by LGBTQ+ people experiencing homelessness. In your opinion, what can we all do to support LGBTQ+ people, and especially LGBTQ+ youth, who are experiencing homelessness?
