Protecting Our Mental Health

Looking for ways to keep the conversation going about LGBTQ+ issues with your ERG, community group, or PFLAG chapter? Welcome to Something to Talk About, a monthly series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality program to create conversation about LGBTQ+ issues. Each month we’ll offer an article on LGBTQ+ topics and suggest a few questions you can use to lead a discussion.

We hosted a conversation about this article as a part of PFLAG Connects and Something to Talk About Live on Thursday, July 23. Did you miss it? You can still watch it here!

Article: LGBTQ+ Populations Experience Newfound Anxiety and Depression in COVID-19 Pandemic

Source: UCSF.edu

Author: Scott Maier

Discussion Questions:

  1. Besides the Covid pandemic itself, what other factors do you think contribute to the depression and anxiety being seen in the LGBTQ+ community? Provide examples if possible.

  2. Do you think that this trend towards depression and anxiety – sometimes with stable periods between episodes – is limited to the LGBTQ+ community, or is this similar in other groups? Give examples to support your answer.

  3. Researchers suggest that people may experience periods of reduced anxiety, but note that these periods should not be equated to being healthy. The suggestion for healthcare professionals is to remain aware and check-in with patients about their mental health. What kinds of things can you do (or have you seen done) for everyday people looking to support their loved ones at this time?
