Being Queer & Christian in Texas

Looking for ways to keep the conversation going about LGBTQ+ issues with your ERG, community group, or PFLAG chapter? Welcome to Something to Talk About, a monthly series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality program to create conversation about LGBTQ+ issues. Each month we’ll offer an article on LGBTQ+ topics and suggest a few questions you can use to lead a discussion.

We hosted a conversation about this article as a part of PFLAG Connects and Something to Talk About Live on Thursday, November 12. Did you miss it? You can still watch it here!

Article: Queer & Christian in Texas: Are They Always Conflicting Identities?

Source: Remezcla

Author: Stacy Fernández

Questions for Discussion:

  1. The article features the story of three queer Tejanos’ relationship with religion. Is there anything from Paloma, Alonzo, and/or Claudia’s stories’ that you relate to? Is there anything you had not thought about before?

  2. In your experience and expertise, how do these “conflicting identities” play out in other faith traditions and religious communities? Does geography also have impact?

  3. What do you think people who are LGBTQ+, parents, and allies can do to support queer people of faith? Do you have any specific recommendations for creating more inclusive queer spaces?
