Looking for ways to keep the conversation going about LGBTQ+ issues with your ERG, community group, or PFLAG chapter? Welcome to Something to Talk About, a monthly series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality program to create conversation about LGBTQ+ issues. Each month we’ll offer an article on LGBTQ+ topics and suggest a few questions you can use to lead a discussion.

We hosted a conversation about this article as a part of PFLAG Connects and Something to Talk About Live on Thursday, November 5. Did you miss it? You can still watch it here!

Questions for Discussion:

  1. The author discusses the concept of Post-Election Stress Disorder, a term coined by psychologists in 2016. Had you heard of this? What effects have the political climate had on your sense of well-being and self-care plans?
  2. People can sometimes be quick to dismiss others’ reports of stress and anxiety caused by social unrest. Can you identify some of the reasons that this anxiety is happening for some people? If you needed to make the argument for why people should take this seriously, what would you say?
  3. Angela Davis said that, “Self-care has to be incorporated in all of our efforts. [Self-care is] what is going to eventually move us along the trajectory that may lead to some victories.” Audre Lorde called self-care “an act of political warfare.” What does election season self-care look like for you? Have you been able to participate in it to the extent you find necessary?
