Families Who Are Moving House to Protect Their Trans Kids

Looking for ways to keep the conversation going about LGBTQ+ issues with your ERG, community group, or PFLAG chapter? Welcome to Something to Talk About, a series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality  program to create conversation about LGBTQ+ issues. We’ll offer an article on LGBTQ+ topics and suggest a few questions you can use to lead a discussion.

We hosted a conversation about this article as a part of PFLAG Connects and Something to Talk About Live on Thursday, April 29. Did you miss it? You can still watch it!

Article: ‘It’s not safe’: Parents of transgender kids plan to flee their states as GOP bills loom

Source: NBC News

Author: Jo Yurcaba

Questions for Discussion:

  1. The article notes that 14 states are currently considering bans on transition related care for minors and that 44 bills across 25 states specifically target transgender youth. In your opinion, what is going on here? Where did this surge of anti-trans legislation come from? Is there anything we as individuals can do to stop it?
  2. Many of the families featured in this article noted the financial hardships they will experience if they are forced to move, or travel regularly, in order to provide their children gender affirming care. What would you recommend to families who are financially unable to do that? What would you say to a young person whose parents are affirming but are not willing to move?
  3. In your opinion, when is it appropriate for parents and allies to take up space in this conversation and when is it appropriate to create space for these young people to speak for themselves? What can we as allies do to support and elevate the voices of trans kids like Brooke, Kai, Maddie, and others?
