Conversion Therapy in 2021

Looking for ways to keep the conversation going about LGBTQ+ issues with your ERG, community group, or PFLAG chapter? Welcome to Something to Talk About, a series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality program to create conversation about LGBTQ+ issues. Each week we’ll offer an article on LGBTQ+ topics and suggest a few questions you can use to lead a discussion.

We hosted a conversation about this article as a part of PFLAG Connects and Something to Talk About Live on Thursday, August 26. Did you miss it? You can still watch it here!

Article: Conversion Therapy Hurts People. So Why Is It Still Around?

Source: Refinery29

Author: Jean Hannah Edelstein

Questions for Discussion:

  1. The article notes that it seems like individuals involved in movements like Freedom March really do believe that they are helping people. In your experience, have you found that to be true? What would you say to folks who feel that way if you met them today?

  2. The article also mentions that efforts to change a person’s sexual orientation and/or gender identity are ineffective, harmful, and that they cause serious pain. If you feel comfortable sharing, can you expand on that? How can organizations like PFLAG better support survivors?

  3. In recent years a number of states and localities in the US have banned conversion therapy for LGBTQ+ minors. What kind of impact do you think those laws will have? Do you have any recommendations for LGBTQ+ advocates hoping to pass a conversion ban in their area?
