Celebrating LGBTQ+ History in an Era of Censorship

As the historical contributions of the LGBTQ+ community is being minimized many are looking for ways to educate themselves. And as the stories of LGBTQ+ individuals are being removed from classrooms and libraries many are looking for resources where they will see themselves represented. This episode of Something To Talk About Live, we will be discussing Chase DiBenedetto’s article in Mashable, “Want to know more about LGBTQ history? Follow these accounts.” with Eric Cervini, award-winning author, producer, and historian of LGBTQ+ politics.

Something to Talk About Live is a series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality program to create conversation about LGBTQ+ issues. Each week we offer an article on LGBTQ+ topics and suggest a few questions you can use to lead a discussion with your ERG, community group, or PFLAG chapter.

  1. Before reviewing this list, how many of the resources included were you familiar with? Had you ever thought to learn more about LGBTQ+ history on social media before? Why or why not?

  2. Are you familiar with any other creators, campaigns, or resources on social media that you would add to this list? What about books, documentaries, or other resources focused on LGBTQ+ history?

  3. What can LGBTQ+ people and their allies do to ensure that young people have access to diverse and inclusive materials about LGBTQ+ history, even in those localities and states that are banning books from libraries and removing inclusive curriculum from schools?
