International Nonbinary People’s Day

Celebrated for the first time in 2012, July 14 is International Nonbinary People’s Day. It is observed worldwide to raise awareness about the issues faced by people who are nonbinary and the lack of legal recognition they experience in countries across the globe.

Questions for Discussion:

  1. The research reveals that the number of people in the U.S. who identify as transgender or nonbinary is higher than previous studies had reported. What factors do you think went into this change?

  2. One of the interesting findings was that while more people say they know someone who is transgender and support measures like full nondiscrimination protections, or space on federal forms for nonbinary identities, they also say — more than ever before — that one’s gender is based on the sex they were assigned at birth. What do you think is causing this disconnect for people? What’s behind it?

  3. About 43% of respondents say that they feel that views on gender are changing too quickly. Why do you think this is the case? How would you respond to someone who made this argument?
