Each month we’ll offer an article on LGBTQ+ topics and suggest a few questions you can use to lead a discussion.

Article: Recent study finds nearly 1,000 BYU student survey respondents identify as LGBTQ

Questions for Discussion:

  1. What do you know about the relationship between The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the LGBTQ+ community? Has there been an evolution in how people who are LGBTQ+ are viewed?

  2. The article mentions that students held “Rainbow Day” to encourage the campus community to be openly supportive of those who are LGBTQ+. Do you think events like this are effective in signaling affirmation, or is more needed, including from the administration itself? Why?

  3. The study found that LGBTQ students were twice as likely to experience suicidal thoughts as their non-LGBTQ peers, establishing a connection between rejection and harm, often rooted in religious beliefs. What kinds of things can people of faith do to actively signal their support to help change this trend?
