The LGBTQ+ Generational Wealth Gap
Looking for ways to keep the conversation going about LGBTQ+ issues with your ERG, community group, or PFLAG chapter? Welcome to Something to Talk About, a series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality program to create conversation about LGBTQ+ issues. Each week we’ll offer an article on LGBTQ+ topics and suggest a few questions you can use to lead a discussion.Â
We hosted a conversation about this article as a part of PFLAG Connects and Something to Talk About Live on Thursday, September 2. Did you miss it? You can still watch it here!

Questions for Discussion:
-
The stereotype of “a wealthy gay couple with no children and a sizable disposable income” is incredibly pervasive, especially in the west. Why is this myth of queer affluence so prevalent, and what’s behind it? What can LGBTQ+ advocates do to challenge that concept?
-
As you look at your own experience, can you identify places where the lack of generational wealth for LGBTQ+ people has had an impact on you? What was that impact? Were you conscious of it at the time, or is it something understood in retrospect? Do you think resolving this this is more a question of economics or social justice?
-
The article concludes with a few suggestions that individuals can create legacy wealth within the LGBTQ+ community. What are some of these suggestions? Do they seem accessible to you as a practice for many people who are LGBTQ+? Are there any not mentioned here that you’d add?
