Something to Talk About: July 2019

Looking for ways to keep the conversation going about LGBTQ issues with your ERG, community group, or PFLAG chapter? Welcome to Something to Talk About, a monthly series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for EqualityTM program to create conversation about LGBTQ issues. Each month we’ll offer an article on LGBTQ topics and suggest a few questions you can use to lead a discussion.

Have feedback about how your conversation went? Let us know by emailing [email protected].

The LGBTQ Civil Rights Fight is Far From Over

Source: Vox

Author: Katelyn Burns

Questions for Discussion:

  1. Did you come across the Atlantic article, The Struggle for Gay Rights Is Over written by James Kirchick that the author mentions? Do you agree with the premise that LGBTQ folks need to “admit that they’ve won?” Why or why not?
  2. Do you think that most people are aware that so many LGBTQ protections have been rolled back in recent years or that police harassment of trans women of color is so pervasive?
  3. Do you believe that Obergefell – which legalized same sex marriage in all 50 states – is settled law? If the Supreme Court overturned that ruling, what do you think would happen in your state?
