Support for The Equality Act
Looking for ways to keep the conversation going about LGBTQ+ issues with your ERG, community group, or PFLAG chapter? Welcome to Something to Talk About, a series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality program to create conversation about LGBTQ+ issues. Each month we’ll offer an article on LGBTQ+ topics and suggest a few questions you can use to lead a discussion.
We hosted a conversation about this article as a part of PFLAG Connects and Something to Talk About Live on Thursday, April 8. Did you miss it? You can still watch it here!

Questions for Discussion:
- The research outlined in this article found that majorities of Americans support nondiscrimination protections for people who are LGBTQ+. With that is mind, why do you think legislation like The Equality Act – which would provide those protections – has not become federal law?
- Representative David Cicilline (D-RI) noted that most people aren’t aware that these nondiscrimination protections for people who are LGBTQ+ do not already exist. What would you do if you found yourself in a conversation with someone who clearly believed that people who are LGBTQ+ are already protected by federal civil rights law?
- What can we all do to demonstrate our support for legislation like the Equality Act? What about legislation at the state level that targets LGBTQ+ – and especially trans-identified – youth?
