Being a ‘Guncle’

Looking for ways to keep the conversation going about LGBTQ+ issues with your ERG, community group, or PFLAG chapter? Welcome to Something to Talk About, a series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality program to create conversation about LGBTQ+ issues. Each week we’ll offer an article on LGBTQ+ topics and suggest a few questions you can use to lead a discussion.

We hosted a conversation about this article as a part of PFLAG Connects and Something to Talk About Live on Thursday, August 12. Did you miss it? You can still watch it here!

Have feedback about how your conversation went? Let us know by e-mailing [email protected].

Article: The Humor—and Grief—of the Modern-Day “Guncle”

Source: Lit Hub

Author: Steven Rowley

Questions for Discussion:

  1. In your personal experience, how does the “cultural moment” that gay uncles, or guncles, are having impact our understanding of chosen family in the LGBTQ+ community? Do guncles have to be biological?

  2. In the article you note that you were robbed of a guncle of your own. What impact do you think having a guncle would have had on you as a young gay man? What impact do you think having LGBTQ+ adults and role models has on queer kids growing up now?

  3. People often struggle to have conversations about sexual orientation and gender identity with their children. If you feel comfortable sharing, can you tell us a bit about how your family navigated those conversations with your niblings? Do you have any recommendations for parents who want to start those conversations with their children?
