How Will YOU Celebrate Pride This Year?

After two years of postponed, cancelled, and virtual-only Pride events, many people are extremely excited to be back together to celebrate this year. Organizers in Rochester, MN reported that turnout nearly doubled at their Rochester Pride on May 21. More than 120,000 people attended the Belgian Pride Parade in Brussels this year. This episode of Something To Talk About Live, we will be discussing Sarah Lemire’s article in Today, “What is Pride Month? Everything you need to know about the LGBTQ observance” with members of the PFLAG National staff.

Something to Talk About Live is a series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality program to create conversation about LGBTQ+ issues. Each week we offer an article on LGBTQ+ topics and suggest a few questions you can use to lead a discussion with your ERG, community group, or PFLAG chapter.

We hosted a conversation about this article as a part of PFLAG Connects and Something to Talk About Live on Thursday, June 2. Did you miss it? You can still watch it here!

Article: What is Pride Month? Everything you need to know about the LGBTQ observance

Author: Sarah Lemire

Questions for Discussion:

  1. What do you know about the history of Pride events in your community? Who founded the events you attend each year? What year did the first event happen? Have there been any major milestones that should be celebrated?

  2. This article highlights the rainbow flag as a “universal symbol for LGBTQ” pride and has details about its history and evolution. What are some other symbols that you commonly associate with LGBTQ+ community? What other pride flags are important for you and your friends and family?

  3. Have you ever traveled to attend Pride in a place like San Francisco or New York? If so, what was that experience like? If not, would you if you were given the opportunity?
