International Self-Care Day

International Self-Care Day was established in 2011 to raise awareness about self-care by focusing on what it is, why it is important, and the benefits for individuals, families, and communities. It is now recognized by the World Health Organization as the culmination of Self-Care Month, which begins on June 24.

We hosted a conversation about this article as a part of PFLAG Connects and Something to Talk About Live on Thursday, July 21, 2022. Did you miss it? You can still watch it here!

Article: Everything You Know About Self-Care Isn’t Wrong… But It’s Not Quite Right

Source: Women’s Health

Questions for Discussion:

  1. How do you define self-care? What has it looked like for you?
  2. The article notes that in one study, 42% of adults said that they’d relied on unhealthy habits to get through the past couple of years (e.g., drinking). At the same time, people are talking about self-care more than ever. What do you think went wrong?
  3. The queer community is under massive pressure and attack. And while self-care feels necessary — Audre Lorde called it political warfare and self-preservation — it often feels like it’s too self-indulgent. How do you handle pushback like this?
  4. Where can people in queer/ally spaces get started with their self-care efforts, especially if their resources are limited (e.g., financial, access to healthcare, etc.)?

Something to Talk About Live is a series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality program to create conversation about LGBTQ+ issues. Each week we offer an article on LGBTQ+ topics and suggest a few questions you can use to lead a discussion with your ERG, community group, or PFLAG chapter.
