Being Queer & Picking a College

Looking for ways to keep the conversation going about LGBTQ+ issues with your ERG, community group, or PFLAG chapter? Welcome to Something to Talk About, a series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality program to create conversation about LGBTQ+ issues. Each week we’ll offer an article on LGBTQ+ topics and suggest a few questions you can use to lead a discussion.

We hosted a conversation about this article as a part of PFLAG Connects and Something to Talk About Live on Thursday, June 10. Did you miss it? You can still watch it here!

Article: How to Choose a College as an LGBTQ+ Student

Source: BestColleges.com

Author: Ciera Graham, Ph.D.

Questions for Discussion:

  1. The article lists five features that LGBTQ+ students should look for in a college. Do you agree that those five features are good indicators that a campus will be welcoming to LGBTQ+ students? In your opinion, is there anything that should be added to the list?

  2. Are you currently involved with an LGBTQ+ led student group on your campus? If so, how has the pandemic impacted your organizing and events? Are there emerging needs amongst LGBTQ+ students that folks may not be aware of?

  3. Do you have any specific recommendations for supportive parents who would like to ensure their LGBTQ+ children attend a college or university where they will be safe, welcome, and included on campus?
