Trans Representation On Screen

Looking for ways to keep the conversation going about LGBTQ+ issues with your ERG, community group, or PFLAG chapter? Welcome to Something to Talk About, a series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality  program to create conversation about LGBTQ+ issues. Each month we’ll offer an article on LGBTQ+ topics and suggest a few questions you can use to lead a discussion.

We hosted a conversation about this article as a part of PFLAG Connects and Something to Talk About Live on Thursday, March 25. Did you miss it? You can still watch it here!

Article: ‘Pose’ to End With Season 3 at FX

Source: Variety

Author: Joe Otterson

Questions for Discussion:

  1. This article highlights how truly groundbreaking Pose has been – it featured the largest cast of trans series regulars and LGBTQ+ recurring roles ever and led to many firsts. For you personally, what does a show like Pose mean? Did it permanently open doors for the centering of trans and nonbinary actors in trans roles?
  2. When discussing the series’ end, the chairman of FX and the chairman of entertainment for Walt Disney Television both note that Pose uplifted voices and stories that are often underrepresented in media. What responsibility do you think that gatekeepers have to their content creators and actors? What kind of specific things can they do to ensure that inclusive, underrepresented stories continue to be told?
  3. Next week, on Wednesday, March 31, we will celebrate the Trans Day of Visibility. What would you recommend to allies that would like to create and elevate visibility for their trans and nonbinary loved ones on TDOV – and all year long?
