Bisexual+ Health Awareness Month

Did you know that only 33% of women and 39% of men who are bisexual+ are out to their healthcare provider? Or that people who are bi+ are more likely to experience anxiety, depression, and substance use disorders than their gay and lesbian counterparts? This episode of Something To Talk About Live, we will be discussing Lauren Krouse’s article in Prevention, “Bisexual People Are Facing a Public Health Crisis. Better Representation Could Help.” with Still Bisexual’s Nicole Kristal and the Bisexual Resource Center’s Andrea Holland. 

Something to Talk About Live is a series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality program to create conversation about LGBTQ+ issues. Each week we offer an article on LGBTQ+ topics and suggest a few questions you can use to lead a discussion with your ERG, community group, or PFLAG chapter.

  1. Before reading this article, how much did you know about the healthcare disparities that people who are bisexual+ face in the US? What if anything, do you know about the history of Bisexual+ Health Awareness Month?

  2. Do you think better, more inclusive, representation of people who are bisexual+ in media could have a positive impact on health outcomes over time? Why or why not?

  3. What can allies do to encourage healthcare providers and other medical professionals to be more inclusive of bisexual+ patients? Are their resources that you know of that could help providers learn more?
