LGBTQ+ Representation on Star Trek

Looking for ways to keep the conversation going about LGBTQ+ issues with your ERG, community group, or PFLAG chapter? Welcome to Something to Talk About, a series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality program to create conversation about LGBTQ+ issues. Each week we’ll offer an article on LGBTQ+ topics and suggest a few questions you can use to lead a discussion.

We hosted a conversation about this article as a part of PFLAG Connects and Something to Talk About Live on Thursday, May 27. Did you miss it? You can still watch it here!

Article: Growing Up Female and Queer with Star Trek

Author: Bernice Watson & Meredith Lee

Questions for Discussion:

  1. As a Star Trek fan, what do you think of the authors’ assessment of the depiction of queer women throughout the history of the franchise? Are there other episodes that come to mind when you think about LGBTQ+ representation in the Star Trek universe?

  2. How do you think LGBTQ+ inclusion in series like Star Trek impacts younger viewers? Is there more that we can all be doing to ensure that LGBTQ+ people see characters who are like them in television and film?

  3. What, if anything, would you recommend to content creators that are trying to avoid “grand gestures” of LGBTQ+ inclusion without being accused of queerbaiting and/or the blink-and-you-miss-it moments the ways that other franchises have in recent years?
