Being Queer & Evangelical

Looking for ways to keep the conversation going about LGBTQ+ issues with your ERG, community group, or PFLAG chapter? Welcome to Something to Talk About, a series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality  program to create conversation about LGBTQ+ issues. We’ll offer an article on LGBTQ+ topics and suggest a few questions you can use to lead a discussion.

Want to join us to discuss this article live? We’re hosting our next Something to Talk About Live weekly broadcast on Thursday, May 6th at 4:30 pm Eastern/1:30 pm Pacific on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and LinkedIn.

Article: After I Came Out, My Mother Left Our Church to Fight for Queer Youth

Source: Harper’s Bazaar

Author: Leah Johnson

Questions for Discussion:

  1. If you feel comfortable sharing, how did reading this article make you feel? If there anything from the author, or her mother’s experience, that resonates with you?

  2. In your experience, how often do you see transformation, like the described here, among mothers who learn their child is LGBTQ+? How often do you see moms who are unable to reconcile their faith with who their child is? What are the most common themes that you see emerging from their struggle?

  3. What organizations and resources do you recommend to moms from conservative faith traditions when they learn that their child is queer? Are there any topics or conversations that you find to be particularly persuasive among those still struggling?
