How Anti-Trans Legislatin Impacts People with Intersex Conditions

Looking for ways to keep the conversation going about LGBTQ+ issues with your ERG, community group, or PFLAG chapter? Welcome to Something to Talk About, a series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality program to create conversation about LGBTQ+ issues. Each week we’ll offer an article on LGBTQ+ topics and suggest a few questions you can use to lead a discussion.

We hosted a conversation about this article as a part of PFLAG Connects and Something to Talk About Live on Thursday, October 21. Did you miss it? You can still watch it here!

Article: Anti-trans legislation will have drastic effects on intersex people & their healthcare

Source: LGBTQ Nation

Author: Juwan J. Holmes

Questions for Discussion:

  1. The inclusion of people who are intersex is, for some in the LGBTQ+ and ally space, a newer conversation. How much did you know about this community? Can you connect the reasons why issues faced by those who are intersex are a part of the LGBTQ+ conversation? What’s the case that you’d make for inclusion?
  2. In what ways do many of the anti-trans pieces of legislation affect people who are intersex? Were you familiar with any of these issues prior to reading the article? If yes, where and how did you learn about them? If no, why do you think that might be the case, especially when the anti-trans legislation has received significant media attention?
  3. What are some of the ways that you can step up as an ally to the intersex community? Give specific examples. Are there specific things that you’d need to be able to do this successfully? Where do you think you can go for help?
