PFLAG Gives Back Through Volunteerism

Without volunteers many nonprofit organizations, including PFLAG chapters, would not be able to do the life-saving work that they do in their communities. This episode of Something To Talk About Live, we will be discussing Tanya Ward Goodman’s article in the Washington Post, “The holidays are over. Here’s how to volunteer year-round.” with PFLAG chapter leaders Sandy Brown, Faith Moeller, and Sung Tse.

Something to Talk About Live is a series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality program to create conversation about LGBTQ+ issues. Each week we offer an article on LGBTQ+ topics and suggest a few questions you can use to lead a discussion with your ERG, community group, or PFLAG chapter.

We hosted a conversation about this article as a part of PFLAG Connects and Something to Talk About Live on Thursday, January 13. Did you miss it? You can still watch it here!

Article: The holidays are over. Here’s how to volunteer year-round.

Questions for Discussion:

  1. Have you been a volunteer before? Where? What motivated you to do it? How did you feel about the experience?

  2. The article mentions that “volunteers should not be expected to be impeccably altruistic” and encourages people to see the personal gains that can be made for themselves when they volunteer. Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Why?

  3. Have you ever heard the term “informal volunteering” before reading this article? Do you think that these kinds of actions are equally important as formal volunteering opportunities? Brainstorm and share examples of informal volunteering that might be possible in your life.
