Your Right to Vote is Under Attack

The fundamental right to vote is under attack in the United States. In 2021, 19 states enacted 34 laws that make voting harder. This episode of Something To Talk About Live, we will be discussing David J. John’s article in The Advocate, “Protecting the Right to Vote: The Only Way to Safeguard LGBTQ+ Rights” with Victoria Kirby York, Deputy Executive Director, National Black Justice Coalition.

Something to Talk About Live is a series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality program to create conversation about LGBTQ+ issues. Each week we offer an article on LGBTQ+ topics and suggest a few questions you can use to lead a discussion with your ERG, community group, or PFLAG chapter.

We hosted a conversation about this article as a part of PFLAG Connects and Something to Talk About Live on Thursday, February 17. Did you miss it? You can still watch it here!

Questions for Discussion:

  1. Are you currently registered to vote? Are you certain that your registration is up to date? Do you have a plan to vote in the 2022 midterm primaries and elections? What would you do if you went to cast your ballot and someone tried to prevent you from doing so?

  2. To your knowledge, were any bills that restricted voting rights passed in your state last year? What, if anything, do you know about the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the For the People Act? Why do you think attempts at passing this bill have been unsuccessful?

  3. What do you think people can do to protect the right to vote? What are some specific ways people can support marginalized communities when their right to vote is being threatened?
