Something to Talk About: November 2019

Looking for ways to keep the conversation going about LGBTQ+ issues with your ERG, community group, or PFLAG chapter? Welcome to Something to Talk About, a monthly series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for EqualityTM program to create conversation about LGBTQ issues. Each month we’ll offer an article on LGBTQ+ topics and suggest a few questions you can use to lead a discussion.

Have feedback about how your conversation went? Let us know by emailing [email protected].

Questions for Discussion:

  1. Have you ever seen or heard claims that The Salvation Army has employment and/or service provision policies that do not include protections for people who are LGBTQ+? If so, where/when/how did you see or hear that? If not, why do you think that’s the case?
  2. What could you do to learn more about The Salvation Army’s current policies and confirm or refute the quote from Commissioner David Hudson that was included in this article? If you are of the opinion that The Salvation Army discriminates against the LGBTQ+ community, what would it take to change your mind?
  3. What would you recommend to someone who is LGBTQ+ or who identifies as an ally that would like to give over the holidays, to support individuals and families experiencing homelessness, but is unsure about supporting The Salvation Army?
