Frequently Asked Questions – Ally
Let's Talk-
How does the Straight for Equality program differ from PFLAG?
The Straight for Equality program was developed for a new audience: those people who often note that they have a friend or colleague who is LGBTQ+, that they would like to do more to show their acceptance and support, but never saw themselves in an advocacy role. Its goal is to make the case as to why they should be allies and provide them with the tools to get started. While PFLAGers often place an emphasis on support, education, and advocacy, the primary focus of Straight for Equality is to invite, educate, and engage allies on their journey.
-
Why are allies so important for PFLAG and the LGBTQ movement?
Allies have become a powerful addition to the PFLAG voice. Because there is “nothing in it for them” many people perceive allies differently than they would a PFLAG parent or a LGBTQ+ person. We need allies to help us make the case for equality and making PFLAG a home for allies is a great way to connect with your community and strengthen your chapter.
-
How can my chapter use the Straight for Equality program in our community?
In short, the possibilities are endless. But just in case you need a bit of inspiration, Straight for Equality has developed a series of field guides meant to help your chapter organize chapter and community wide events. Check out our resource page and don’t be afraid to contact us if you have questions.
-
Are there training opportunities available for our coalition partners or the community at large?
If your chapter would like to host a training opportunity for your coalition partners or for your local community please contact the Straight for Equality team at [email protected] with details and any questions that you might have.

What if I have allies who are interested in advocacy?
Great! Help them get the tools they need to get engaged! Share the link and information on PFLAG’s Advocacy Center online to get started.
